The government granted final approval on Oct 1 and the Bangladesh-Slovenia joint venture has been given 30 days to pay the licence acquisition fee, said Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission chief Shahjahan Mahmood.
The BTRC chairman announced the long-awaited decision at a news conference on Tuesday.
The service is currently available in 72 countries, the BTRC chairman said. The service is being implemented four years after the proposal was initially approved in June 2013.
Users can switch operators within 72 hours of charging Tk 30, he said. They will have to wait for 90 days to change again.
Now operators are likely to try to improve their services in an attempt to hang on to users.
Infozillion BD Teletech MD Mabroor, a son of Hosaf Group Chairman Mohammad Moazzam Hossain, is a director of the group.
Moazzam's brother Mosharraf Hossain is a former BNP MP from Feni 3 seat.
The Anti-Corruption Commission is investigating Moazzam following a High Court order for allegedly making transactions with an account at a Singapore bank.
BNP Senior Vice-Chairman Tarique Rahman and his close business associate Giasuddin-Al-Mamun are convicted of laundering money to the account and spend from it.
