The prices of all levels of cigarettes and tobacco products have been raised in the budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year.
The new prices were announced in the budget speech by Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury on Thursday.
The finance minister said the proposal for tobacco and tobacco products has been put forward to “optimally balance” revenue potential and health risks.
He said, "I propose to set the minimum retail price of cigarettes at Tk 62 for 10 sticks at the low-quality level, Tk 92 for 10 at the medium level, Tk 160 for the high level and Tk 210 for the ultra-high level."
Currently, a pack of 10 sticks of low-quality cigarettes costs Tk 60, which means the price would increase by Tk 2.
The price of 10 sticks of medium-quality cigarettes is currently Tk 80. From there, it will be increased by Tk 12 to Tk 92.
The price of high-quality cigarettes has increased from Tk 140 to Tk 160 per pack, an increase of Tk 20.
The biggest price hike in this year's budget is proposed for premium or ultra-high-end cigarettes. The price of 10 cigarettes at this tier has been increased by Tk 25 from Tk 185 to Tk 210.
