The 76-year old former officer, Waji Ahmed Chowdhury, who hailed from Sylhet's Golapganj, retired from the army in 1992.

His nephew Reshad Ahmed Chowdhury filed a case of murder in the early hours of Thursday with Kafrul police, said Sub-Inspector Mukul Mia.

Reshad told bdnews24.com that a youth named Abdullah began working as manservant for Waji Ahmed two months ago. "We can't find that youth since my uncle was found murdered."

He said a television set, a mobile phone and a laptop were missing from his uncle's home at Road No. 4 Mohakhali DOHS. "We don't know yet the amount of money stolen from the house."

Quoting the family of the murdered man, Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) police outpost Sub-Inspector Bachchu Mia said Waji Ahmed's son Fuad Ahmed Chowdhury had found his father in an unconscious state after returning home on Wednesday evening.

The former army officer was then rushed to the Combined Military Hospital, but doctors there declared him dead. The body was later sent to DMCH for an autopsy.

Mia said, "There was a black spot on Waji Ahmed's throat and wounds were on the left side of his chest and right ankle."

Later on Thursday afternoon, DMCH forensic department Assistant Professor Md Sohel Mahmud told reporters, "Evidence has shown that the victim's legs were tied and he was strangled to death with a rope."

Waji Ahmed's wife Atia Chowdhury died six years ago. Their elder son Nabid Ahmed Chowdhury lives in the United States. Fuad, the younger son, lived in the Mohakhali DOHS house with his father.

Waji Ahmed’s younger brother Ejaz Ahmed Chowdhury, who also retired from the army as a major general in 1996, toldbdnews24.com: "Abdullah is also from Sylhet. Someone we know had recommended him to us for hiring as a servant. I suspect that he has killed my brother."

Family members said Waji Ahmed would be buried at his ancestral home in Sylhet.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Mirpur zone Deputy Commissioner Masud Ahmed said, "We are investigating this case very seriously. We hope to bring the murderer to book very soon."
