The latest incident of martyrs’ plaque vandalism took place in the early hours of Ekushey February.
Miscreants desecrated it on the premises of Mohendrapur Primary School under Jagannathpur Union Parishad sometime after 12am on Friday.
Local people expressed anger over the incident, which followed a similar instance of vandalism at Kumarkhali’s Joduboyra Secondary School on Thursday.
Mohendrapur Secondary School head teacher Abdur Rahim Khan said that two columns – one on each side – were broken down.
Despite it being razed, teachers and students paid their tributes to the martyrs by laying flowers at the plaque, he said.
All teachers and students demanded stringent punishment for those who vandalised the plaque.
President of the school managing committee Shariful Islam blamed the activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and its student wing Islami Chhatra Shibir for the incident.
Activists and leaders of the local social and cultural organisations too have strongly denounced the incident that has happened within a span of 24 hours of similar vandalism in the same Upazila.
The disfigurement of the plaques is a pre-mediated attack ahead of the Upazila elections, they said.
Kumarkhali Police Station’s OC Lutfar Rahman said they arrested Jamaat activist Shamsul Islam for his involvement in the Joduboira school incident.
“However, none could be arrested over the incident at Mohendrapur school. Our efforts are on to arrest the vandals,” he said.
A martyrs’ plaque was also damaged at Boalmarhi Government Primary School under Haripur Union at Pabna’s Chatmohor Upazila.
