Reagan sent for six-day remand in Gulshan cafe attack case

Terror suspect Mohammed Rakibul Hassan Reagan will face quizzing by Dhaka’s counter-terrorism officials as a court granted a six-day remand to facilitate the investigation. He is one of the suspects in Gulshan cafe attack.

Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Golam Nabi passed the order on Sunday after police presented him to the court seeking a 10-day remand, said Inspector Humayun Kabir of police’s Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime unit.

Humayun told bdnews24.com that Reagan was taken to custody for three days previously in a murder case filed with Hazaribagh Police Station.   

Eighteen-year-old Reagan has been arrested under the Anti-Terrorism Act in connection with JMB militancy and was one of suspects taken alive from outlawed group’s Kallyanpur hideout of suspected JMB militants. The investigation report of the case is due to be submitted to the court by Sep 19.

Police nabbed Reagan during a raid on the house named ‘Taj Manzil’ in Dhaka’s Kallyanpur on July 25.

A SWAT team stormed the flat, killing nine ‘militants’ while Reagan, who received bullet wounds was arrested alive. He was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.

Police later claimed that the dead were the members of outlawed Bangladeshi militant outfit JMB, although they, along with weapon, seized flags of IS and black uniforms signifying the dress of IS fighters.

A total 20 hostages including 17 foreigners were hacked to death in an attack carried out by the terrorists at an upscale cafe in Dhaka’s Gulshan area on July 1. Army personnel recovered six bodies including five of the terrorists from inside the cafe the next day in a special operation.

Two police officials were also killed while trying to foil the operation by the militants.
