On Thursday with the T20 Cricket World Cup underway, Benapole Immigration Police said it had arrested Atanu Dutta, 40, an Indian bookie. The news was published by the media.
On Sunday, RAB said they had arrested Dutta from Mirpur in Dhaka. But when asked about the arrest on Thursday, RAB spokesman Habibur Rahman told bdnews24.com they knew nothing about his arrest earlier.
"RAB arrested him from Mirpur. We also filed a case against him under the ICT Act at Mirpur Police Station," he said.
Benapole Immigration Police Officer-in-Charge Md Moniruzzaman told bdnews24.com that RAB officials and several from other intelligence agencies arrived after Dutta was arrested.
"In the presence of RAB, officials from another intelligene agency took him away," he said.
Moniruzzaman said a general diary had been filed at Benapole after the arrest.
RAB did not inform the media about the arrest, which was quite unusual. Generally, after an arrest, RAB informs reporters and holds press conferences to provide details.
But it was silent about Dutta's arrest.
OC Moniruzzaman said there was a ban on Dutta's leaving the country and a red alert in immigration zones for three days.
Dutta, son of Manindra Dutta of Dinesh Palli Municipal Park, South 24 Parganas district in West Bengal, came to Bangladesh on Mar 15. His visa expired on Mar 31, and he had been staying in the country illegally since then.
