RAB Additional Director General Ziaul Ahsan told bdnews24.com that five persons running an 'abduction gang' have been arrested during the raid, but some of their accomplices have managed to flee.
Ahsan said the gang is connected with the kidnapping of a Chittagong-based businessman a few days ago.
"They were trying to fleece the family of the kidnapped business, they had asked for gold as ransom, when the RAB-4 unit got the wind off it and went on a midnight raid," Ahsan said.
As the RAB squad broke into the gang's hideout in Ovi Petrol Pump area at Aminbazar, a scuffle ensued, during which Captain Nahid was hit on the head by an iron head.
Ahsan said he was first shifted to a private Enam Medical nursing home and then moved to the Combined Military Hospital for treatment.
The RAB squad arrested five of the gang.
That included a serving policeman -- Assistant Sub- Inspector Fazkul Islam of Savar Model police station -- and a former soldier -- Rezaul Haq -- who left the army a year ago.
The three others nabbed were a 'police informant' Miran Khan, a known criminal Sujon who has been released on bail three months ago, and one Shamsul Huq.
"We have been trying to track down this gang for a while, but have so far failed to nab them. On Friday night, we got a definite lead and pursued it," Ziaul Ahsan said.
He said the RAB was trying to nab those of the gang who managed to escape during the midnight raid.
On Feb 11, jewellry businessman Mridul Choudhury was kidnapped from his residence on the Old Telegraph Road in Chittagong,
His family said that those who took Choudhury away identified themselves as personnel of the RAB and the Detective Branch.
The Bangladesh Jewellers Association's Chittagong chapter threatened an agitation to protest the abduction, if Choudhury was not rescued within 72 hours by Saturday.
On Friday, Mridul Choudhury was rumoured to have been found in wounded condition at Faridpur's Boalmari.
But neither the police nor the RAB confirmed that -- nor did his family or any hospital.
Ziaul Ahsan told bdnews24.com on Saturday that his force has found ' no trace' of Mridul Choudhury.
"We are trying to find him."
