The parents of murdered schoolboy Ishayat Shahriar Apratim have alleged that they are being harassed and subjected to abusive behaviour through mobile phone calls.
They also say false and defamatory claims involving Apratim and his family are being circulated on social media.
Fearing for her safety, Apratim’s mother Nahida Begum, a teacher in the Bangla department at Comilla University, has switched off her mobile phone.
Apratim’s father KM Firoz Shahriar filed a complaint (GD) with Cumilla Sadar South Police Station on Friday.
Inspector Rajib Ahmed, the investigating officer in the murder case, said: “Apratim’s father has alleged cyberbullying and abusive behaviour through multiple calls. The matter is being investigated.”
Shahriar said multiple Facebook accounts had been used to spread what he described as false claims about Apratim and his family.
“At the same time, both of us are receiving calls from different numbers and being subjected to abusive behaviour,” he said.
“Because of this, Apratim’s mother has switched off her phone out of fear. We feel unsafe.”
Apratim was a seventh-grade student at Border Guard Public School in the Kotbari area.
He went missing after leaving home on the afternoon of Sept 18.
Police recovered his body the following day from a wooded area in Sananda in the Lalmai hills.
Two days later, police said Apratim had been killed in an attempt to take the iPhone he was carrying.
Nahida, however, has raised another possibility.
She previously served as an assistant proctor at Comilla University and, during that time, handed several juvenile offenders over to police. She suspects that incident may also have had some connection to her son’s killing.
Apratim’s father Shahriar is the complainant in the murder case.
Police have arrested four people so far.
Two of them, Saiful Islam Tuhin, 19, and one Siam, 19, are being held at Cumilla Central Jail.
The other two are minors and have been sent to the Child Development Centre in Gazipur.
