The clash broke out around 12pm on Saturday at the town’s Majampur Gate area, coinciding with the programmes to mark the National Mourning Day, police and locals said.
The deceased, ‘Sabuj’, 25, was an activist of local Awami Juba League unit, claimed the ruling party’s Kushtia town unit former general secretary Mominur Rahman Momij.
Several others injured during the clash were admitted to the Kushtia Sadar Hospital. Duty doctors said two of them were in critical condition.
Police said the clash was the result of an old dispute between the groups.
The Awami League and its affiliate organisations are observing the National Mourning Day with different programmes across the country.
A group of rogue army officials had murdered Bangladesh’s founding father Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and most of his family members on this day in 1975.
The two groups of the ruling party followers in Kushtia clashed after paying tributes on the Bangabandhu’s mural near Majampur bus stand Saturday noon.
Quoting witnesses, Superintendent of Police Pralay Chisim told reporters Momij was leading one of the groups and Awami Swechchhasebak League’s town unit General Secretary Sazzad Hossain the other.
Sabuj, ‘Bidyut’, 38, and Ajmal Hossain were stabbed during the fight. Sabuj died at the Sadar Hospital where all the injured were taken.
Members of the confronting groups were seen carrying hockey sticks, sharp weapons and firearms. Witnesses told bdnews24.com they heard gunshots during the clash.
The clash, amid police presence, had prompted the locals to shut down their businesses in the area.
