Mueen-Uddin, Ashrafuzzaman indicted

The International Crimes Tribunal indicted Chowdhury Mueen-Uddin and Ashrafuzzaman Khan on war crimes charges on Monday.

Justice Obaidul Hassan-led ICT-2 gave the verdict ordering trials to commence from Jul 15.

The two are currently abroad, but the trials will begin in absentia. They have been charged on 11 counts related to the massacre of the Bengali intellectuals in the last days of the 1971 Liberation War.

Khan is believed to be currently living in New York and Mueen-Uddin in London.

Both were leading the notorious militia ‘Al Badr’ leaders that was tasked by the Pakistani military junta with extermination pf the Bengali intelligentsia they saw as the 'brain' behind the revolt.

Ashrafuzzaman Khan was said to be the ‘chief executor’ and Mueen-Uddin ‘operation in-charge’ of Al-Badr.

They were said to be active members of Islami Chhatra Sangha – the student affiliate of Jamaat-e-Islami in 1971. The Jamaat sided with Pakistan and opposed the independence of Bangladesh.
