Police have found several handwritten notes during the recovery of the hanged body of Mariam Jhatun, the second wife of controversial lawmaker Gazi Nazrul Islam, an expelled member of Jamaat-e-Islami.
Police recovered the body of Mariam, Nazrul’s second wife, from an apartment at the NAM Bhaban across from the parliament complex on Sunday evening.
Tejgaon Division Additional Deputy Commissioner Fazlul Karim said, “Some notes written by Mariam were recovered from the room where she lived.”
At night, police took lawmaker Nazrul and his first wife, Maksuda Khanam, into custody in connection with the recovery of Mariam’s hanging body.
Later that night, Mariam’s father, SM Masum Billah, filed a case accusing lawmaker Nazrul, his wife Maksuda, and the victim’s maternal uncle Obaidur Rahman of abetting suicide. The case statement also mentions the recovery of the notes.
One of the notes reads, “I bow down to you again and again only because I have grown attached to you. Otherwise, I am not as cheap as you think I am.”
In another, she described having entered a “battle” out of trust, only to realise at the end that the person she trusted was “the commander of the opposing side”.
It continues, “I lost and you won, because I trusted you, and that is why you were able to deceive me and win. Even as I stood on the edge of destruction, I kept a smile on my face. Think of it this way: the very reason for this smile will become the reason for your destruction.”
Another note contains two separate passages. One says, “He was another woman’s husband. On paper, his wife had the rights over him. And I was the fool. I had made someone else’s husband the man I desired for myself.”
The other reads, “Losing someone is more honourable than having only half of them. Because love is never something to be shared. Love is either whole, or it remains incomplete.”
In the case statement, Mariam’s father, Masum Billah, alleged that his elder daughter Mariam, 19, married lawmaker Nazrul last June at the “direct instigation” of her maternal uncle Obaidur Rahman. Mariam had been living with Nazrul and Maksuda at Flat 203 of NAM Bhaban No. 5, across from the Parliament complex.
The case statement said that after the marriage, Mariam had told her family that Nazrul and Maksuda had subjected her to “physical and mental abuse” over different matters.
It added said that at around 5:30pm on Sunday, Nazrul called Masum on his mobile phone and asked him to come to the residence immediately. When he arrived, Masum said he found Mariam’s hanged body.
Several officials of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station said they would show Nazrul and his first wife Maksuda as arrested in the case and sought seven days’ remand for them. Necessary preparations had been completed, they said.
Tejgaon Division Deputy Commissioner of Police Ibn-e-Mizan said the speaker had been informed about the arrest of the lawmaker.
Police officer Fazlul Karim told bdnews24.com that Nazrul and Maksuda would be produced before the court seeking seven days’ remand.
