Heavy winds triggered by cyclone Komen, which expected to make landfall around evening, has caused deaths of three people in Bangladesh’s coastal belt.

Mohammad Islam, 50, a resident of Saint Martin’s Island in Cox’s Bazar; Patuakhali’s Galachipa Upazila resident Nurul Islam Fakir, 55, and Manjura Begum, 55, of Bhola’s Lalmohan Upazila were killed after being hit by uprooted trees, the district administrations confirmed on Thursday.
Saint Martin’s Island Union Parishad Chairman Nurul Amin told bdnews24.com wind speeds and rainfall picked up as the night progressed.
Islam was killed around morning after being hit by a coconut tree that was uprooted around dawn.
He added around 50 houses were damaged and many trees uprooted in the coastal island.
Patuakhali’s acting deputy commissioner Md Nazrul Islam said Fakir was hit and injured by a tree that uprooted around 1pm. He died while being taken to the hospital.
Bibi was killed in Char Kachua, also hit by an uprooted tree, Bhola’s Lalmohan UNO Jakir Hossain told bdnews24.com.
Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar sea ports have been asked to hoist signal 7 and Mongla and Payra seaports signal 5 since Wednesday due to the cyclone.
