Police have arrested three people over the attack on content creator Salman Muqtadir’s "BrownFish" studio and surrounding facilities in Dhaka, but say they have yet to establish a clear motive.
The attack took place around 10:30pm on Saturday at the New Gini Properties housing project in the ECB Chattar area.
Along with "BrownFish", the attackers targeted the New Gini office and other structures at the project.
Police initially suspect the incident may have stemmed from a dispute over the land, although they have yet to establish who was involved in any such dispute.
“We have already arrested three people. Legal proceedings over the incident are under way,” DMP Joint Commissioner Md Mahidul Islam told reporters on Sunday after visiting the site.
“More of our teams are working. We hope we will be able to bring those involved to justice.”
Mahidul said two suspects were arrested at the scene after police arrived and brought the situation under control. A third was arrested in a raid later that night.
Police identified the three by their first names as Mamun, Aslam and Munna.
Mamun is from Gafargaon in Mymensingh and lives in the Bhashantek slum, while Aslam, an autorickshaw driver, is from Tangail. Munna also lives in the Bhashantek slum, according to police.
Motive Still Unclear
Asked what prompted the attack, Mahidul said investigators needed to question the suspects and gather more information before reaching a conclusion.
“Our initial impression is that this is a housing business. So many people came together as a group at night,” he said.
“For that reason, there may have been a dispute over the land, possibly involving its possession.”
New Gini Properties Director Saiful Islam Bhuiyan had alleged after the attack that the company had long faced extortion, threats and attempts to seize its land.
He also claimed that around 250 to 300 armed people stormed the project on Saturday night, firing 40 to 50 rounds before breaking through the gate and looting money, phones, hard drives and other belongings.
Salman, who arrived at the studio after the attack, said materials belonging to 30 to 40 clients had been kept there.
He initially thought the attack might have been directed at him personally, but changed his view after seeing damage across the project.
“At first I thought it was something against me personally, but then I saw that they had attacked the entire project,” he said.
“So I’m sure whatever happened was related to the project.”
No Evidence Of Extortion Link Yet
Asked specifically whether the attack was linked to an extortion demand, or whether money had been demanded from Salman, Mahidul said police had no information to support that at this stage.
“We have no information at the moment about any extortion demand or anything of that sort,” he said.
“Our initial impression is that it may have involved groups in a dispute over the land. We will know once we conduct a proper investigation.”
Mahidul said the investigation was continuing and police expected to establish more about the motive and those involved as it progressed.
