The manager of a petrol pump has allegedly been killed following an argument in Narail after a truck driver was unable to get fuel. Another worker at the pump has been seriously injured as well.
The incident occurred near the Messrs Tanvir Filling Station in the Tularampur area of the Narail-Jashore Highway around 2:20am on Sunday, according to Md Oli Mia, chief (OC) of Narail Police Station.
The deceased, 33-year-old Nahid Sardar, was a local resident and manager of the pump. The injured has been identified as local resident Jihadul Islam, 27.
Md Jashimuddin, the cashier at the pump, said: “A truck driver named Sujat came to the pump, but we could not give him fuel because we had run out. He got into an argument with Nahid Bhai over this.
“At one point, the truck driver grew enraged and said, ‘You have oil in your pumps, but aren’t giving it to me. I will run you over’.”
Md Sohan Islam, another pump employee, said: “The driver took up a position near the pump after threatening to run Nahid Bhai over. Then, around 2:15am, Nahid Bhai finished his work at the pump and headed home with his friend Jihadul Islam on a motorcycle. Sujat then turned his truck around and followed them.”
“This made us suspicious, so our cashier Jashimuddin Bhai and I followed the truck on the motorcycle. We found Nahid Bhai had been run over and the driver had fled on the truck.”
Nahid was killed on the spot and Jihadul seriously injured. Both were taken to Norail District Hospital. From there, doctors sent Jihadul to Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
OC Mia said, “We have collected CCTV footage from near the pump. From it, we believe this incident has occurred due to the argument over oil. Still, we are investigating whether there was any other prior dispute involved.”
Nahid’s body is at the morgue and additional police personnel have been deployed in the area. A case is being filed and an investigation is under, the police official said. He assured that action would soon be taken against the perpetrator.
