Police say the attack on Special Branch (SB) officer Altaf Hossain began when he stepped in to protest the beating of a garage owner over an autorickshaw parked on the road in Savar’s Aminbazar.
Altaf, 58, and his 26-year-old son Ariful Islam were attacked with sticks inside the family’s garment factory in Bordeshi Madina City around 8:30pm Saturday.
Doctors at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital later declared Altaf dead, while Ariful remains under treatment.
Dhaka District Police Superintendent Shamima Parveen, who visited the scene Sunday, said: “This was not a mob incident. Altaf saw a rickshaw garage owner being beaten while he was on his way to pray and protested.
“The attackers turned on him, forcing him to take shelter in his son’s factory, where both were beaten.”
Altaf’s wife Shiuli Begum filed a murder complaint naming 15 people. Police arrested private car driver Zahirul Islam, 30, identified as the main instigator.
Police and the PBI have identified 12 suspects from CCTV footage and witness accounts.
Savar Model Police Station chief Saiful Islam said raids were under way to arrest the remaining 11.
PBI Inspector Mohammad Solaiman Gazi said a team visited the scene and began a shadow investigation.
Altaf worked at the SB’s Malibagh branch and lived in Aminbazar with his family. He was a native of Sirajganj’s Sadhupara.
