Four children, including two sisters, have drowned in Mymensingh in the span of five hours.

Police said the incidents occurred between Sunday afternoon and evening.

Of them, two sisters died in Gauripur Upazila, and one girl each drowned in Gafargaon and Phulpur Upazilas.

Gauripur Police chief Habibur Rahman said the children drowned in a pond in Bir Pashchimpara village of Ramgopalpur Union. They were Ria Moni, 8, and Ilma Akhter, 4, both residents of the village.

Relatives said the sisters went to bathe in the pond at 2pm, and later drowned in the water.

After some time, Ria was rescued and taken to Gouripur Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared her dead.

A Fire Service and Civil Defence team from Ishwarganj later recovered Ilma’s body around 6:30pm.

Officer Habibur said the family did not file any complaint, so police permitted the burial without conducting an postmortem.

Meanwhile, Gafargaon Police chief Md Moniruzzaman said a one-and-a-half-year-old child named Muntaha drowned in a pond in Saltia Union of the Upazila at noon.

He said the child fell into a pond beside her house unnoticed and was later declared dead at the Upazila Health Complex.

Phulpur Police chief Md Firoz Hossain said Lamia Akhter, 4, drowned near her home around 3pm.

Police recovered the body, conducted a postmortem and handed it over to the family, who filed no complaint.
