‘Kalnagini’ snake recovered from Sreemangal hospital quarter, released in Lawachhara

The snake was recovered unscathed

A “Kalnagini” or golden tree snake was rescued from the third floor of the staff quarters at Sreemangal Upazila Health Complex in Moulvibazar.

Later, the snake was released into Lawachhara National Park through the Forest Department.

According to Nazmul Haque, range officer of the Sreemangal Wildlife and Nature Conservation Department, the snake was rescued around 8pm on Monday from the residence of Sraban Pal in the quarters.

Family members in Pal’s home suddenly spotted the snake. Panic spread, and they quickly left the house.

The matter was then reported to Upazila Health Officer Dr Synthia Tasnim, who immediately contacted Sitesh Ranjan Dev, chairman of the Bangladesh Wildlife Service Foundation. Upon receiving the news, a rescue team quickly arrived at the scene and safely rescued the snake.

Range Officer Nazmul said, “The Kalnagini snake was rescued unharmed. It was handed over to us by the Bangladesh Wildlife Service Foundation.”

“After keeping it under observation for two to three hours, the snake was released later that night in the Janakichhara area of Lawachhara National Park.”

Kalnagini or Chrysopelea ornata is a species of mildly venomous opisthoglyphous colubrid snake found in both South Asia and Southeast Asia. It is commonly known as the golden tree snake, ornate flying snake, or golden flying snake.

Chairman Sitesh Ranjan said, “Kalnagini snakes are rarely seen nowadays. They mainly live in forest areas, and various folk tales and mythological beliefs are associated with them.”

He urged people not to panic if they see a Kalnagini snake and to contact the Forest Department or a wildlife rescue team instead.
