Three killed, two injured as bus and pickup collide in Habiganj

Three people have been killed and two others injured after a passenger bus and a pickup van collided head-on in Habiganj’s Nabiganj Upazila.

The accident occurred on Monday morning at Rokonpur in Paniumda Union along the Dhaka‑Sylhet Highway, said Sherpur Highway Police Sub‑Inspector Md Jasim Uddin.

One person died at the scene, while two others died later at Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, the police officer said.

The victims were identified as vegetable trader Mashhud Ahmed, 40, from Karikhana village in Dighalbak Union; Abul Kashem, 50, from Inatganj South village; and Moyna Mia, 30, an employee of Fahim Vegetable Store in Inatganj Bazaar.

According to police, citing local residents, several vegetable traders and employees from Inatganj Market were travelling in the pickup to Digambar Market in Bahubal Upazila to buy fresh produce.

The pickup collided head-on with a passenger bus operated by Lucky Paribahan travelling in the opposite direction.

Mashhud died at the scene.

Four people, including the pickup driver, were seriously injured and taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital for treatment. Kashem and Moyna died there later in the afternoon while undergoing treatment.

Two other people with injuries remain in hospital, police said.

After being informed of the accident, Sherpur Highway Police went to the scene and removed the two damaged vehicles, restoring normal traffic on the highway.

The damaged bus was later seized in the Aushkandi area.

Both the bus and pickup have been taken into the custody of Sherpur Highway Police, SI Jasim said.
