Police have applied to detain Sudip Chakroborthy, an associate professor of the Department of Theatre and Performance Studies at Dhaka University, in a case over the suicide of Munira Mahzabin Mimo, a student of the same department.
The investigating officer of the case, Badda Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Kazi Iqbal Hossain, filed the petition on Monday. The Dhaka Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court will hear the petition.
SI Iqbal Hossain said a petition had been filed to detain the accused in jail. If necessary, a remand application will be filed at a later time.
The petition states that a raid was conducted in Dhaka’s North Badda area on the basis of a secret tip-off and Sudip was arrested around 3:20pm on Sunday. Later, he was shown arrested in connection with the case and questioned about the incident. “Evidence has been found” against the accused for his involvement in the case, it says.
In the interest of justice, it is necessary to detain him in jail until the investigation is completed, the application said. It also states that remand may be required in the future so that the suspect may be questioned in police custody.
Mimo was a student of the 2019-20 academic year and lived with her family in a house in Badda.
She student was found hanged in her room on Sunday morning and was declared dead by the doctors. A note was found in her room.
It started, "Sudip sir must be paid Tk 50,000.”
It then wished Sudip and a classmate well.
“Return the gifts given by sir..."
Around noon on Sunday, Mimo’s father filed a case against Sudip, accusing him of inciting suicide. He was later arrested.
