Police have secured two days to interrogate Mithu Biswas in custody, arrested in connection with the “rape” of a Bangladesh University of Professionals (BUP) student in Savar.

Dhaka Senior Judicial Magistrate Tajul Islam granted the request on Sunday following a petition from the investigating officer.

Mithu was arrested from Tejkunipara in Dhaka around 2:30am on Saturday.

The investigating officer, Savar Model Police Station Sub-Inspector Abdul Wahab, produced \ him before the court, seeking seven days for interrogation in custody.

Defence lawyer Farid Uddin appealed for bail and cancellation of the interrogation plea, but the court granted two days’ police custody.

According to the case statement, on the evening of Oct 14, the victim returned home after tutoring students in Savar to find her house locked.

She learned that her mother had left the key with a nearby tea stall owner. On her way back home after collecting the key, Sohel Rosario approached her and began asking questions.

A while later, Mithu and Biplob Rosario joined him. The trio followed and continued questioning her before Sohel allegedly forced her into his home under duress around 7pm and “raped” her, while the others assisted him.

They also threatened to kill the victim if she told anyone of the incident.

On Thursday, the victim filed a case with Savar Model Police Station naming Sohel, Mithu, and Biplob as suspects.
