Two suspected muggers lynched within hours in Dhaka's Mohammadpur

Two other alleged muggers were injured in the incidents that occurred hours apart

Two men accused of mugging have been beaten to death in separate incidents that took place within four hours of each other in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur.

The attacks happened around 3:30am and 7:30am on Wednesday near the Nabinagar Bridge, within a short distance of each other, according to police.

The dead men were identified by single names as Sujon, 21, and Hanif.

The lynchings occurred within days of another similar incident, when another suspected mugger, identified as 23-year-old Md Yamin, had been beaten to death on the bank of the Buriganga River near Mohammadpur’s Chandrima Model Town. Another person was injured in that incident.

Mohammadpur Police Station chief Kazi Rafiq said Sujon was killed around 3:30am, while Hanif died around 7:30am.

“They were lynched while mugging people,” he said.

Two other alleged muggers were injured in the incidents, he added.

All four were taken to Suhrawardy Hospital, where doctors declared two of them dead. The two injured men are undergoing treatment in the same hospital.

Rafiq said all four men were faced criminal charges, including mugging, filed with various police stations.
