Independent Dhaka University Central Students' Union (DUCSU) vice-president candidate Jalal Ahmad, also known as "Jwalamoyi Jalal", has withdrawn his bail petition in a case accusing him of attempting to kill his roommate.
The petition was initially filed on Monday by Jalal’s lawyer Rafiqul Islam, and the case was brought before the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque for a hearing.
The defence, however, withdrew the application during the proceedings, citing a lack of preparation.
“We will apply for bail again [on Tuesday] on behalf of Jalal Ahmad,” said Rafiqul.
According to the case details, Md Rabiul Haque, a student of the 2018–19 session in the Department of Political Science, had gone to bed in his room around 12am.
At nearly 12:30am, Jalal allegedly entered the room, turned on the lights and began dragging a chair noisily, creating a loud disturbance.
The noise woke Rabiul, who reportedly told Jalal, “Brother, I have to go to the library in the morning, please make less noise.”
The case statement claims that Jalal became angry and engaged in an argument with Rabiul. During the altercation, Jalal allegedly struck Rabiul with a wooden chair, aiming for his head “with the intent to kill”.
Rabiul managed to block the blow with his hands, but the impact caused an injury to his forehead.
The case further alleges that Jalal then picked up an old tube light from the room and swung it toward Rabiul’s head. Though Rabiul moved away, the blow hit the left side of his chest. The tube light shattered on impact, leaving a sharp edge that caused a cut injury.
