The nomination papers of the BNP and 11-party alliance candidates for the presidential election have been declared valid.
The two candidates are Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir of the BNP and Oli Ahmad from the Jamaat-e-Islami-led 11-party alliance.
Chief Election Commissioner and election officer AMM Nasir Uddin scrutinised the nomination papers on Sunday morning.
Representatives, including the proposers and supporters of the candidates, were present at the Nirbachan Bhaban in Dhaka’s Agargaon for the scrutiny. The Jamaat delegation arrived around 11am. An hour later, the BNP delegation arrived.
Nasir first screened the nomination papers of the 11-party alliance candidate and then the BNP nominated candidate.
After the screening, the election officer declared both nomination papers valid.
The proposers and supporters of Fakhrul’s nomination papers were BNP National Standing Committee Members Abdul Moyeen Khan and Gayeshwar Chandra Roy. The delegation also included Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni and Whip Mia Nur Uddin Ahmed Apu.
The proposer of Oli Ahmad's nomination was Leader of the Opposition Shafiqur Rahman, while Abdullah Al Amin was the supporter.
After the scrutiny, Dhaka-16 MP Abdul Baten from the 11-party alliance delegation, told reporters: "Oli Ahmad had two nomination papers. The first nomination paper was declared valid in the scrutiny. Therefore, the second one did not need to be examined."
The nomination paper of BNP candidate Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir was then declared valid after the examination.
Election Commission Senior Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said, "The nomination papers of both have been examined and accepted."
According to the announced schedule, the last date for withdrawal from the presidential poll is Aug 18 and the vote in the parliament chamber will be on Aug 20.
Fakhrul, as the candidate for the party with an absolute majority in parliament, is set to become the 23rd head of state of Bangladesh.
Tarique Rahman announced Fakhrul as the party's presidential candidate at the start of a high-level meeting of the BNP at the Secretariat on Thursday.
