Shayan Yusuf, a seventh-grade student at Milestone School and College in Dhaka’s Uttara, has died after being burnt in a fighter jet crash.

He was the son of AFM Yusuf, an assistant professor in the chemistry department of the college branch of Milestone, and Shamima Shammi, a chemistry teacher at the school branch of the same institution.

The family is originally from Pal Bari in Basikpur village of Basikpur Union in Lakshmipur Sadar Upazila.

Though their relatives still live in the village, the couple had been residing in a rented apartment in Uttara Sector 10 with their two children.

Shayan’s younger sister, Farisa, is also a student at Milestone.

On Tuesday afternoon, Shayan’s body was brought back to the family’s village home in Basikpur. He was laid to rest following a funeral service there.

Upon visiting the family home, it was found that relatives and neighbours had gathered in mourning.

The house was heavy with grief over the loss of the young boy.

Family members said Shayan was burnt while attending class. Later, he was taken to the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, where he died around 3:30am while receiving treatment.

Afnan Fayaz, also a seventh-grade student, died in the same incident. He was the son of Abdus Samad of Rahimbaksh Haji Bari in Sonapur village of Parbotinagar Union in the same Upazila. His family said he was buried in Dhaka on Tuesday morning.
