Pakistan’s new High Commissioner to Bangladesh Imran Haider has presented his credentials to President Mohammed Shahabuddin at Bangabhaban.
The Pakistan High Commission in Dhaka shared the development in media statement on Tuesday, describing the ceremony as “solemn.”
“During the meeting, the high commissioner conveyed greetings and best wishes from the leadership and people of Pakistan to the president and the brotherly people of Bangladesh,” the statement read.
He noted that relations between Pakistan and Bangladesh are deeply rooted in shared history, common faith, and cultural affinities, and emphasised that Pakistan looks forward to further strengthening the bonds of friendship and cooperation in areas of mutual interest, it added.
Haider replaces Syed Ahmed Maroof, who had been serving in Dhaka since December 2023.
Maroof went on sudden leave in early May and never returned.
His abrupt departure sparked speculation and triggered wide discussion across social media at the time.
Haider is a career diplomat in the Pakistan Foreign Service.
Before arriving in Dhaka, he served as ambassador to Myanmar and earlier to Tajikistan.
He was also deputy head of mission in Tehran and held diplomatic assignments in Madrid, New Delhi, Abu Dhabi and at Pakistan’s UN mission in New York.
The high commission said the president welcomed Haider, congratulated him on the appointment and assured full support in carrying out his diplomatic responsibilities.
He also expressed his best wishes for the high commissioner’s successful tenure in Bangladesh, it added.
