Another worker at the Ferdous Steel Shipbreaking Yard in Bhatiari of Chattogram’s Sitakunda Upazila has died, taking the overall death toll to nine.
Chattogram Civil Surgeon Dr Jahangir Alam confirmed the latest death to bdnews24.com at 10pm on Friday.
He said that a victim named Matiur Rahman died at a private hospital last night. His body has not yet been brought to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.
"There are eight other bodies at CMC Hospital," he said.
Seven others are undergoing treatment for injuries at CMC Hospital and other hospitals in the city and in Sitakunda, he said.
The dead have been identified as Sunny Jaldas, 23, Palash Jaldas, 35, Habibur Rahman, 51, Mohammad Mansur, 55, Nasir Uddin, 51, Abdul Alim, 36, Rana Mia, 23, Matiur, 19, and Khokon Mia, 23.
Among the deceased, Sunny, Palash, Habibur, Mansur and Nasir are residents of Sitakunda’s Bhatiari. Mansur and Nasir were brothers. Khokon and Rana hailed from Gaibandha and Alim was from Pabna.
The Fire Service and police initially reported that three people had been killed and several others injured when toxic gas leaked at the Ferdous Steel Shipbreaking Yard on Bhatiari Station Road on Friday morning. The death toll later increased.
