Residents of Kamrangirchar have exchanged plastic waste for everyday essentials under a new programme aimed at reducing dumping and waterlogging in Dhaka.
The initiative was launched jointly by Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) and Bidyanondo Foundation at Ashrafabad High School on Saturday.
DSCC Administrator Md Abdus Salam inaugurated the programme.
He said plastic dumped in drains and canals blocks water flow and contributes to waterlogging, adding that directing waste to designated collection points would help both drainage and the environment.
Salam said a permanent collection stall would soon be set up in Gulistan, with plans to gradually expand the initiative to every ward under DSCC.
He also announced plans for a “food for reading” programme for street children at suitable locations near the city’s waste transfer stations.
Bidyanondo Foundation Executive Director Jamal Uddin said plastic collected over the past two years had been sold for nearly Tk 10 million, with the proceeds used to provide meals for around 400,000 people.
Organisers said they aim to collect nearly 100,000kg of plastic waste over the next year through 100 mobile collection campaigns.
Dhaka-7 MP Hamidur Rahman, DSCC Chief Waste Management Officer Air Commodore Md Mahbubur Rahman Talukder and Bidyanondo volunteers were also present.
