A garment worker has been killed after being hit by a car while standing beside a highway in Gazipur.
The out-of-control vehicle also smashed into a battery-run rickshaw, leaving three others, including the driver, injured.
The accident occurred outside a clothing factory in the Bhabanipur area of Gazipur Sadar on the Dhaka-Mymensingh Highway at 9:30pm on Tuesday, Salna Highway Police Station chief Shahabur Rahman said.
The victim, identified as Abdul Kuddus, worked as an assistant cutting man at the NAZ garment factory in Rajendrapur.
According to witnesses, Kuddus was waiting for transport on the western side of the road when a Maona-bound car careened off the tarmac and struck him, killing him instantly.
The vehicle then ploughed into a rickshaw, causing injuries to those on board.
Local residents rescued the injured and sent them to hospital.
Officer Rahman said police recovered the body from the scene and sent it to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College Hospital for postmortem.
He said locals seized the car and handed it over to police, but the driver managed to flee. Legal action is under way.
