Two schoolboys riding a motorcycle have been injured after being shot at with shotgun pellets from a CNG-run autorickshaw in Noakhali’s Begumganj.
The incident took place in front of an auto rice mill in Baraichatal village of Jirtali Union on Saturday night, said Begumganj Model Police Station chief Md Shamsuzzaman.
The injured have been identified as Sakibul Hasan, 16, of Baraichatal village, and Sakaayet Hossain Nadim, 16. Both were Grade 10 students at Shamsunnahar High School in Begumganj.
Sakib and Nadim said they were returning home from Banglabazar around 9:30pm on Saturday, riding a motorcycle with Sakib’s nephew, Sahil.
On the way, two CNG-run autorickshaws began following them. When they reached the area in front of the auto rice mill, the occupants asked them to stop the motorcycle.
The two students said they saw firearms in the hands of passengers in the autorickshaw and continued without stopping.
The passengers then opened fire at them twice, they said.
Sakib and Nadim were hit by pellets and fell off the motorcycle. The attackers then chased them, prompting the two boys to run into a nearby house for shelter.
After the attackers left, locals took the injured students to Noakhali General Hospital.
Resident Medical Officer Rajib Ahmed Chowdhury said two patients with gunshot injuries from Begumganj were admitted to the hospital after 1am.
“They have been given the necessary treatment. Their condition is now stable,” he said.
Officer Shamsuzzaman said police visited the scene when the incident was reported and met the victims at the hospital to record their statements.
“An investigation will be conducted and legal action will be taken,” he said.
The incident comes days after five people, including a cameraman, were injured in a shooting targeting event management workers in Gazitola area of Moushakpur village in Alaiyapur Union around 11pm last Monday.
