At least five people have died as a pickup truck rammed a parked covered van in the City Gate area of Chattogram.

The accident took place on the Dhaka-Chattogram Highway in Akbar Shah Thana around 5:15am on Monday.

Four more people were injured in the accident.

Akbar Shah Police Station Sub Inspector Sajjad Hossain told bdnews24.com that the pickup was coming from Faujdarhat in Sitakunda to the port city when it hit a covered van parked on the side of the road from behind.

At least five people died on the spot, he said, adding four other people with injuries were sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital.

A unit from Agrabad Fire Station rushed to the scene and rescued the injured, said Talha Bin Jashim, a spokesman for the Fire Service.

The dead were identified as Roni Das, 25, Akash Das, 26, Ajit Das, 24, Jewel Das, 18, and Mohammad Sohag, 32. All of them were passengers on the pickup and hailed from different parts of Sitakunda.

Police say the deceased passengers were all fish traders. They were travelling to Chattogram’s Fishery Ghat from Sitakunda to buy fish.
