Police have arrested 24 activists of Jubo League and outlawed Bangladesh Chhatra League in connection with a procession in Noakhali Sadar Upazila.
They were arrested in separate raids in Eojbalia, Kaladrap, and the municipality area of the Upazila overnight on Friday, Sudharam Model Police Station chief Md Touhidul Islam said.
Although police have yet to share the identities of the detainees, they claimed nine of the arrestees were Jubo League leaders and 15 Chhatra League leaders.
Police and witnesses said, around 4pm on Friday, activists of Chhatra League took out a large protest procession in the Sadar Upazila’s Bandherhat Bazar.
The procession converged at a short rally after circumambulating different roads in the market.
Although a few police members were present near the market during the procession, no immediate action was taken due to the large number of protesters.
The incident sparked widespread discussion in the district.
According to locals, the protest march was led by former Noyanni Union Chhatra League president Ashraful Karim alias Babu.
Before the afternoon demonstration, about a thousand activists of the organisation started gathering at Bandherhat Bazar.
Officer Touhidul said that after receiving information about the possible procession, police were deployed in Bandherhat Bazar in advance.
Unable to hold the programme at the designated place, they later held a march outside the market.
Following the incident, 24 people were arrested in an overnight raid. The arrestees will face legal actions, the police officer said.
