Former state minister for information and communication technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak has suffered injuries to his neck and waist in a prison van accident, his lawyer Tarikul Islam has said.
On Tuesday, the lawyer said an MRI scan found displacement in three vertebrae in Palak’s lower back and complications in two vertebrae in his neck.
He said the report showed displacement in the L-2, L-3 and L-4 vertebrae.
“There are also complications in two areas of the neck. Problems were found in the discs between C5-C6 and C6-C7,” Tarikul added.
Earlier, on Apr 28, Palak’s lawyer Farzana Yasmin Rakhi claimed that he was injured on Apr 19 while being taken back to prison after a hearing at the International Crimes Tribunal.
According to Farzana, another vehicle hit the prison van, causing Palak to fall inside the vehicle and injure his neck.
After the remarks were reported in the media, the Department of Prisons denied that any accident had occurred.
In a statement, Assistant Inspector General (Development and Media) Jannat-ul Farhad said the prison van braked hard while descending from the Postogola Bridge, causing Palak to collide with fellow inmate Fazle Karim Chowdhury inside the vehicle.
He said Palak suffered “minor neck pain” and underwent necessary medical examinations, including an MRI scan.
Tarikul said on Tuesday that Palak was already unwell before the incident.
“I met him in prison last Saturday. He is unable to move his neck,” the lawyer said.
“Despite the injuries to his neck and waist, no treatment arrangements are being made. We will apply to the court seeking proper medical treatment for him,” he added.
