Newly appointed chief of Bangladesh Navy Khondokar Misbah ul Azim has been adorned with the rank badges of vice admiral.

Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and outgoing navy chief Admiral M Nazmul Hassan pinned the badges on the new naval chief on Thursday.

The ceremony took place in the morning at the Prime Minister's Office in the Armed Forces Division, Dhaka Cantonment, his Deputy Press Secretary Jahidul Islam Roni said.

He said the prime minister congratulated Vice Admiral Misbah ul Azim after the badge pinning ceremony, while the new navy chief expressed gratitude to Tarique on behalf of the maritime force.

Prime Minister's Defence Advisor Retired Brig Gen AKM Shamsul Islam, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Hasan Mahmood Khan, Army Quartermaster General Lt Gen Md Shaheenur Rahman, Armed Forces Division Principal Staff Officer (PSO) Lt Gen Mir Mushfiqur Rahman, Prime Minister's Military Secretary Maj Gen Abul Hasnat Mohammad Tariq, and Prime Minister's Additional Press Secretary Atikur Rahman Rumon attended the event.

The government promoted Rear Admiral Misbah ul Azim to vice admiral on Jul 16 and appointed him as the navy chief.

He most recently served as the Bangladeshi ambassador to Oman, succeeding Admiral Nazmul at the top post of the naval force.

A student of Rajshahi Cadet College's 17th batch, Misbah earned his commission in the navy in 1987.

During his service career, he commanded key formations across naval regions, including Dhaka and Chattogram zones.

He also served as the commandant of the Bangladesh Naval Academy.
