Former president of a faction of the Dhaka University unit of the Bangladesh Students’ Union, Meghmallar Bosu has been hospitalised after being found unconscious at Dhaka’s Suhrawardy Udyan.
He was rescued from near the Ramna Gate late Monday night and taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital around 12:30am.
Inspector Habibur Rahman, chief of the hospital’s police camp, said Meghmallar was under medical observation and, according to doctors, was “out of danger”.
Friends at the hospital said Meghmallar had posted what appeared to be a “suicide note” on Facebook shortly before he was found.
In the post, he referred to personal depression, guilt, family matters and experiences from his political life.
He also asked friends and fellow activists not to blame his former girlfriend for his death and urged them to look after his mother and family.
The post prompted Dhaka University students and leaders of several student organisations to search for him.
Abdul Kader, a coordinator of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement, eventually found him unconscious near the gate of Suhrawardy Udyan and helped take him to hospital.
Doctors performed gastric lavage after his admission. He is now receiving treatment in Bed 3 of Room 602 at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
Meghmallar had also been hospitalised in February following what classmates described as an overdose of medication. He recovered and later resumed his political activities.
His friends said he had been struggling with depression over several issues for some time, particularly since the DUCSU elections.
In July, Meghmallar resigned from the Students’ Union and joined the Network for People’s Action (NPA), a newly formed political platform.
The NPA was launched at the beginning of this year with an announced list of 99 members.
Reports of Meghmallar’s association with the platform emerged around that time, and he publicly confirmed his resignation from the Students’ Union to join it in July.
Classmates said he had been unwell since the DUCSU elections and had required hospital treatment following the February incident.
