A case has been filed against five individuals over the “gang rape” of a student from the Shahjalal University of Science and Technology (SUST) and the alleged filming of the act, with two of the accused being students at the same university.
Sylhet Metropolitan Police’s Additional Deputy Commissioner Saiful Islam said the case was filed at Kotwali Police Station on Thursday by the victim herself.
According to the case statement, the incident took place on May 2 at a student mess in Sylhet city.
The complaint alleges that the victim was raped by multiple individuals, who also secretly filmed and photographed her in compromising situations.
These materials were later circulated on the internet and mobile phones “in an attempt to defame her”.

Shanto Tara Adnan and Swagato Dash Partho, both third-year students of the sociology department at SUST, have been named in the case files, along with some unidentified individuals.
Police arrested Adnan and Partho on Thursday night.
Adnan is a Chhatra League activist, and was accused in another case for attacking a protest during the July Uprising.
Partho was the treasurer for the university’s cultural group Dik Theatre. The organisation later announced his removal from the post through its official Facebook page.

University Proctor Mokhlesur Rahman said an investigation committee will be formed to probe the incident, and administrative actions will follow based on its findings.
Students of the university held three protest rallies and human chains demanding punishment for the accused.
Faisal Hossain, a student of the Sociology department, said: “After 2024, we had envisioned a Bangladesh free of rape. But it is painful to see such a disgraceful incident occur on a campus that regularly champions women's rights. We demand the expulsion of the rapists involved and the harshest possible punishment.”
