The Election Commission (EC) has asked state broadcasters Bangladesh Television (BTV) and Bangladesh Betar to record Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin's speech announcing the schedule for the 13th parliamentary election and the national referendum.

The recording is expected to take place on Wednesday, EC officials said.

Letters were sent to the two broadcasters on Monday.

EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed said BTV and Betar had been called on Dec 10 to record the speech by CEC Nasir Uddin, with the exact time to be confirmed later.

Election Commissioner Abdur Rahmanel Masud said, “The EC secretariat is writing to BTV and Betar. The schedule will be announced through the speech. It could be done on Dec 10. There’s not enough time. The schedule should be announced by Dec 11.”

The EC has a meeting scheduled with President Md Shahabuddin on the same day.

The EC met with Chief Advisor Muhammad Yunus on Sunday to discuss preparations for the election and the schedule. It told the head of the interim government that it was "fully prepared" to hold parliamentary elections and a referendum on the same day in February.

The CEC and other election commissioners thanked the chief advisor for fully cooperating with the EC in the preparations. During the meeting with the chief advisor, the CEC also said that citizens have already involved themselves in election activities, which has created an “electoral mood” in the country.

Before the meeting with the chief advisor, the commission held a meeting at its office in Agargaon presided by the CEC.

Following that meeting, Election Commissioner Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah said, “This time it has been decided to increase the voting time by an hour. In that case, the time will be increased half an hour in the morning and half an hour in the evening. The voting will be done from 7:30 am to 4:30pm without any break.”

He said the schedule will be announced any day from Dec 8 to Dec 15.
