A Chattogram court has sentenced two men to death and another to life imprisonment for the murder of a trader in the city’s EPZ area five years ago over a business dispute.
Judge Nishaduzzaman of the Third Additional Metropolitan Sessions Court delivered the verdict on Tuesday.
The capital punishment recipients are Tanvir Mohammad Sojib and Md Hridoy, Md Ahsan alias Yasin was jailed for life.
Additionally, Tanvir and Hridoy were each fined Tk 25,000, according to Additional Public Prosecutor MAM Azad. Ahsan also received a fine of Tk 20,000, with an additional three months in jail in default of payment.
All three convicts were in court and were taken to prison after the verdict was announced.
The victim, Mahfuzur Rahman, was found dead in May 2020.
According to the case dossier, Mahfuzur and his father Abdul Rahman ran a second-hand clothes business in a makeshift shop near Shahin Shah Tower in the New Mooring area under EPZ Police Station. Mahfuzur also stayed overnight at the shop.
On the night of May 1, 2020, Abdul Rahman left the shop after giving his son dinner. The next morning, Mahfuzur’s body was found hanging from the stair railing of a nearby building.
His hands and feet were bound, while his mouth was stuffed with cloth and sealed with tape. A nylon rope was also tied around his neck.
Abdul Rahman filed a murder case against unnamed suspects, alleging that his son had been suffocated to death and then hanged with the nylon rope to make it appear like suicide.
After police submitted the chargesheet, the trio were indicted in January 2022.
Additional PP Azad said the convicts, all residents of the same area, had confessed to the crime in court.
