The killers of “top criminal” Khandaker Naim Ahmed Titon, shot dead near Dhaka’s New Market, have been brought “within a framework”, said Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police Additional Commissioner Md Shafiqul Islam.
On Tuesday, Shafiqul said no arrests have yet been made.
Speaking at a press briefing, he said investigators were advancing steadily but could not disclose operational details.
“We are working on it,” he said when asked about progress in the murder probe.
Titon was gunned down on the night of Apr 28 by two masked men riding a motorcycle. Police later identified him as a listed “top criminal”.
He had been named in a 2001 police list of 23 top criminals published during the BNP–Jamaate-e-Islami alliance government.
His brother-in-law Sanjidul Islam Imon is also a listed figure, and both were linked to the Haris-Joseph crime network in Mohammadpur.
Two weeks on, no arrests have been made.
Responding to questions, Shafiqul said the attackers were traced as far as Rayerbazar.
“We know they went up to Rayerbazar by motorcycle, beyond that we have lost their trail,” he said.
He added, “Since we have been able to trace them up to Rayerbazar, you can assume we are gradually bringing them within a framework.”
He, however, declined to provide further specifics, citing investigative sensitivity.
“We are not letting anything go. It is not that we are focused on only one angle. We are taking into account everything reported in the media and all information available to us,” he said.
Earlier in the day, Shafiqul briefed reporters about the arrest of five members of an inter-district robbery gang from Jatrabari, detained while preparing for a heist.
The arrested were Md Liton Jabbar, 52, Ismail Hossain Mamun, 55, Md Babul Babu, 45, Ayub Bhuiya, 30, and Md Roman, 35.
Police recovered two pistols, two magazines, seven rounds of ammunition, 2.2kg of explosives, a machete and two motorcycles.
He said the group had gathered near a furniture shop planning robberies ahead of Eid, targeting mobile financial service agents carrying large sums.
“They also planned to rob a jewellery shop in a nearby district at night,” he said, adding each had multiple cases against them.
He urged MFS agents to use police support when transporting large cash amounts.
Shafiqul said 568 people had been arrested in the first 11 days of a special Dhaka operation launched on May 1 targeting extortion, drugs, armed criminals and online gambling.
He warned the drive would intensify further, saying no criminal would be spared, regardless of influence or identity.
