Thirty-five candidates who lost in the Feb 12 elections have challenged the results in the High Court, alleging several irregularities in the voting process.
On Monday, the bench of Justice Md Zakir Hossain, appointed to hear election-related cases, admitted the petitions separately and fixed them for hearing.
In the order admitting the cases, the court directed the Election Commission to preserve ballots, CCTV footage and related equipment from the concerned constituencies.
Notices have also been issued to the winning candidates.
Among those who filed the petitions are 21 candidates from the BNP, 12 from Jamaat-e-Islami, and one each from Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis and the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP).
The BNP candidates include Nadira Akter from Madaripur-1, Shahrin Islam from Nilphamari-2, Md Sharifuzzaman from Chuadanga-1, M A Quayum from Dhaka-11, Syed Mehedi Ahmed Rumi from Kushtia-4, Md Nabi Ullah from Dhaka-5, Md Faruk Alam from Gaibandha-5, Md Hasan Zafir Tuhin from Pabna-3, Akbar Ali from Sirajganj-4, Kamrul Huda from Cumilla-11, Tanveer Ahmed Robin from Dhaka-4, Aminul Haque from Dhaka-16, Syed Imran Saleh Prince from Mymensingh-1, Sohel Hossain Kaikobad from Kurigram-2, Saiful Islam from Rangpur-6, Emdadul Haque Varosha from Rangpur-4, retired Maj Gen Md Sharif Uddin from Rajshahi-1, DMD Ziaur Rahman from Rajshahi-4, Habibur Rahman Habib from Pabna-4, Sunsila Jebrin from Sherpur-1 and Motahar Hossain Talukder from Mymensingh-2.
Jamaat-e-Islami candidates who filed the petitions include party Secretary General Mia Golam Parwar from Khulna-5, Shameem Sayedee from Pirojpur-2, Dr Sultan Ahmed from Barguna-2, Elias Molla from Narayanganj-2, Iqbal Hossain Bhuiyan from Narayanganj-3, Anowarul Islam Raju from Lalmonirhat-1, Firoz
Haider from Lalmonirhat-2, Abdul Mannan from Dhaka-6, Md Abdur Rahim Sarker from Gaibandha-4, Md Enayetullah from Dhaka-7, Nur Ahmed Anwary from Cox’s Bazar-4 and Jashim Uddin Sarker from Dhaka-10.
The petitions were also filed by Bangladesh Khelafat Majlis chief Maulana Mamunul Haque from Dhaka-13 and LDP candidate Omar Faruk from Chattogram-14.
Supreme Court senior lawyer Ruhul Quddus Kazal appeared in two cases filed by BNP candidates Aminul Haque from Dhaka-16 and Tanveer Ahmed Robin from Dhaka-4.
Following the initial hearing of the two petitions on Mar 8, Kazal told reporters that Jamaat candidate Abdul Baten had been declared the winner in Dhaka-16, while Jamaat candidate Syed Ziaul Abedin won in Dhaka-4.
“The court has directed the Election Commission secretary to immediately serve the notice and inform the chief election commissioner and the Election Commission,” he said.
He also alleged that law-enforcing agencies had assisted the declared winners.
“In our petitions we have brought allegations against the law enforcing agencies and presented evidence before the court. We have specifically mentioned that a presiding officer himself was sealing ballots,” he said.
Kazal further said that an unusually large number of ballots had been cancelled at certain polling centres.
Under Section 49 of The Representation of the People Order, the chief justice has assigned a single High Court bench to hear election petitions related to alleged irregularities.
