Police have recovered the body of a 12-year-old domestic worker from the residence of the public relations officer of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in Dhaka’s Pilkhana.
The victim, identified with a single name Halima, was found hanging inside a bathroom on Monday afternoon.
She hailed from Lakshmipur’s Ramgati Upazila.
New Market Police chief Mohammad Ayub said authorities were alerted by BGB officials.
"We went to the residence around 2:30pm, broke open the locked bathroom door, and found the girl hanging from the ceiling," said Ayub.
The body has been sent to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) morgue for a post mortem examination.
Police said BGB Public Relations Officer Md Shariful Islam and his wife were both at work when the incident occurred.
Only Halima and the couple's 11-month-old daughter were at the house.
Investigators suspect Halima may have taken her own life between 12pm and 2pm.
Shariful told reporters that Halima’s mother also works as a domestic help at another officer’s house in Pilkhana.
He said Halima started working at his home six months ago.
"The girl was always cheerful. We even had Sehri together. She and my daughter were both asleep when we left for work in the morning," Shariful said.
The matter came to light around 1pm when Shariful's assistant arrived at the house and found the baby playing alone on the floor.
After failing to get a response from Halima, the assistant noticed the bathroom door was locked from the inside, police said.
When the girl did not respond to repeated knocks, the assistant alerted Shariful, who returned home and attempted to reach the girl.
Failing to get any response, Shariful informed the BGB authorities, who subsequently called the police.
Police are currently investigating the matter and awaiting the post mortem report to confirm the exact cause of death.
