Former Narayanganj City Corporation mayor Selina Hayat Ivy has been shown arrested in a fresh murder case, just a day after the High Court (HC) granted her bail in five other cases.
The arrest pertains to the death of interior decorator Selim Mondal, who was killed during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement last year.
Tarek Al Mehedi, additional superintendent of police, confirmed on Friday night that a Senior Judicial Magistrate court approved the police's prayer to show her arrested in the case on Thursday afternoon.
Selim, 29, died on Jul 20, 2024, when a multi-storey building in Siddhirganj was torched during clashes between protesters and police. He was decorating the interior of the branch of a local bank when he and two colleagues were burnt to death.
While Ivy was not initially named in the case filed by the victim’s father in June last year, police claim her involvement surfaced during the investigation.
On Thursday, the HC had granted Ivy interim bail in five cases, three for murder and two for attempted murder. Ivy had gone to the HC after being denied bail in lower courts.
The fresh arrest, however, ensures she remains in custody.
Her lawyer Awlad Hossain alleged that the move is politically motivated.
"She is a dedicated public representative being harassed repeatedly through new cases despite not being named in the original FIRs," Awald said.
"This is a violation of her right to justice."
Police have denied allegations of harassment, saying the sheer volume of cases related to the Juy Uprising requires extensive investigation.
Tarek said with nearly 100 cases still under investigation, Ivy could be shown arrested in further cases if evidence of involvement emerges.
Ivy, who was removed from her mayoral post on Aug 18, 2024, following the fall of the Awami League government, has been in custody since her arrest from her Deobhog residence on May 9.
