Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has pinned the rank badge on new Inspector General of Police Md Ali Hossain Fakir in a ceremony at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

According to the PMO, the event was held at the Cabinet Division of the Secretariat on Wednesday, with Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed and his Secretary Manzur Morshed Chowdhury in attendance.

Ali, a 15th BCS police cadre officer, was born on Apr 5, 1968, in Bagerhat.

He holds a BBA (Honours) and MCom from Dhaka University, followed by an MBA.

He has served as superintendent of police in Netrokona, Feni, and Magura, and in 2008 was DC of the Uttara Zone in Dhaka Metropolitan Police.

He later served in UN peacekeeping missions in Kosovo and Ivory Coast.

Upon returning, he commanded Khulna 3rd APBn before being placed on compulsory retirement in November 2022 over alleged political affiliations with Dhaka University student politics.

Following the Aug 5, 2024, fall of Sheikh Hasina’s government, Ali resumed service at SP rank during the interim government.

He was later promoted to additional IGP in August 2025 after serving as deputy IGP.

In October 2024, he headed the APBN.

With the BNP government assuming office, administrative reshuffles led to Ali replacing Baharul Alam as IGP on Tuesday.

The Police Headquarters confirmed that on Wednesday morning, Ali received a guard of honour upon arrival and took over responsibilities from Baharul.
