A college student and his nephew have been killed in a road accident after they crashed a motorcycle into a parked truck in Chandpur’s South Matlab. The college student was allegedly teaching his nephew to drive the vehicle.
The accident occurred on the approach road to the northern part of the Matlab Bridge on Tuesday afternoon, said Matlab South Police Station chief Md. Hafizur Rahman.
The dead were identified as Fazle Rabbi, 23, from Baispur in Matlab Municipality, and Ishaat, a native of Kalaiya village in Patuakhali district.
Rabbi's aunt, Maryam Begum, said that Rabbi was an undergraduate student of Matlab Government Degree College. His nephew, Ishaat, was a student in grade 10.
Ishaat's father is a driver working at the Secretariat. They live in Jatrabari, Dhaka. For Eid, Ishaat came to visit his maternal grandparents’ house in Matlab with his mother.
Md Jasim, the ambulance driver who brought them to the hospital, said that he was passing by the scene when truck driver Mizanur Rahman of the Roads and Highways Department called the empty vehicle to stop.
“I saw the two lying on the spot in a bloodied state. I learnt that they had met with an accident when one of them was learning to drive a motorbike and could not control their vehicle. They hit a stationary truck used for road department repair work.”
“We rescued them from the scene and brought them to Chandpur Government General Hospital.”
Enamul Haque, a physician at the hospital’s emergency department, said: “A man named Rabbi died before he was brought to the hospital. Another injured person was given primary treatment and referred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) for advanced treatment.”
However, Ishat died on the way to DMCH around 12am on Wednesday.
Police officer Hafizur said the motorbike was recovered from the scene. Necessary legal steps in the incident were under way, he said.
