A group of unidentified people have carried out vandalism and assault after breaking into an Awami League leader’s residence in Rajshahi city in the dead of night.
Motihar Police chief Abdul Malek said the incident occurred around midnight on Saturday at the Kazla Notun Bou Bazar area at the residence of Khaled Hasan Biplob, the organising secretary of the district unit of the banned AL.
The attackers allegedly smashed a television, refrigerator, air conditioner, and other furniture during the attack.
Khaled’s father, Helal Uddin, 62, was confined to a room during the attack, while his mother, Khaleda Begum, 53, was beaten.
Three motorcycles parked at the house were vandalised and set on fire, according to allegations.
Khaled’s family neither talked to journalists nor complained to police about the matter.
A neighbour and witness to the attack said between 100 and 150 people arrived at Khaled's house at around 11:30pm. About 30–40 of the attackers scaled the boundary wall and entered the house premises, looking for Khaled, who is also a former general secretary of the Rajshahi University chapter of Bangladesh Chhatra League.
Khaled has been hiding since Aug 5.
Failing to find him, the intruders allegedly went on a rampage. Loud explosion-like sounds were also heard. The attackers left at around 12:30am, the witness said.
A police patrol team reached the place of the alleged crime after the family called 999 after the attackers had left. Khaleda, who was injured, was too afraid to leave the house to get treatment for her injuries.
Officer Malek said, “Both husband and wife were assaulted. Some items were damaged. We asked them to file a complaint, but they have not lodged one yet.”
