At least 10 people have suffered burn injuries in a fire at a salt factory in Chattogram's Boalkhali Upazila.
The fire broke out on Thursday at the Confidence Salt Factory near West Gomdandi.
Alauddin Talukdar, sub-inspector (SI) of the hospital police outpost, said that the 10 injured individuals have been admitted to Chattogram Medical College Hospital.
He told bdnews24.com that the 10 people were brought to the hospital with burn injuries around 11am, adding that the condition of five to six of them is critical.
The burn victims are Didarul Alam, 32, Ujjal Das, 53, Mohammad Liton, 28, Sirajul Islam, 34, Jahidul Alam, 42, Mohammad Jahid Hossain, 38, Noor Nabi, 25, Mohammad Alam, 45, Mahmudul Haque, 45, and Selim Uddin, 30.
Boalkhali Police Station chief Mozaffar Hossain said that some external workers were doing welding work inside the factory in the morning. A short circuit ignited a machine and papers nearby, leaving several people injured.
Azaharul Islam, a team leader at the Boalkhali Fire Service, said: "When informed, we arrived at the factory at 10:10am. We saw some burnt paper there, but the people on-site had already extinguished the fire before we arrived."
No statement from the factory authorities regarding the incident was received.
