Police have arrested nine people, including three former army personnel , after a businessman in Dhaka's Dhanmondi was robbed of Tk 3.8 million at gunpoint.
A serving army member is also part of the gang, and his command has been informed, police said.
Joint Commissioner (Crime) Md Faruk Hossain of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) shared the arrest details at a media briefing at DMP Media Centre on Sunday.
Two were caught red-handed at the scene, while the rest were picked up in raids across Dakshinkhan, Patuakhali, Kuakata Bus Stand, Mohammadpur and Baitul Mokarram and other areas.
The arrested are Tanvir Abedin, 41, Mojibur Rahman, 60, Zakir Hossain alias Captain Zakir, 60, Solaiman Mridha, 55, Mohammad Kabir Hossain, 50, Abul Kalam Azad, 50, Zakaria Hossain alias Lenin, 40, Sajal Chowdhury, 31, and Saymon Chowdhury, 33.
On the former army members, Joint Commissioner Faruk said Mojibur retired as an army sergeant, while Md Zakir alias Captain Zakir retired as an honorary captain, and Solaiman retired as a senior warrant officer.
Some of them had also previously served in the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), he said.
A police official told bdnews24.com the gang also includes a serving army lance corporal, identified only Shafiq.
Asked about him, Dhanmondi Police chief Md Imdadul Islam said, "We've informed the army about him and sent them all case documents.
"They'll likely take action against him under military law, but he hasn't been handed over to us yet."
The robbery took place on Aug 30 afternoon, when a gang of eight to ten people snatched Tk 3.8 million at gunpoint from Khorshed Alam outside Dingi Restaurant on Dhanmondi's Road No. 12.
Khorshed filed a robbery case the next day, while Dhanmondi Police Sub-Inspector Saiful Islam filed a separate case over the recovered weapons.
While fleeing, Tanvir and Mojibur were arrested with help from Dhanmondi Model Police Station and local residents, who recovered a revolver with four rounds of ammunition from them.
Information teased out from Mojibur and Tanvir led to Zakir's arrest in Dakshinkhan.
Police then arrested the remaining six at different locations.
At the briefing, Faruk said Tk 345,350 was recovered from Zakaria, and Tk 200,000 from Sajal.
In total, Tk 575,350 has been recovered, he said, adding that operations were under way to arrest the remaining fugitives linked to the gang.
Police found four existing cases against Tanvir and six against Sajal, all related to robbery and mugging.
Zakaria faces two cases involving drugs and attempted murder.
How the Robbery Unfolded
Police said victim Khorshed had gone to meet the gang in Dhanmondi to buy gold.
As planned, he was taken by rickshaw to the spot in front of Dingi Restaurant.
A group of four to five people, led by Lenin, was already waiting there.
They reportedly blocked the rickshaw, snatched the money from Khorshed and assaulted him before fleeing on motorbikes.
In response to a question, the police officer Faruk said some gang members were involved in the gold trade and would find buyers by claiming to have gold for sale.
"They'd tell buyers to bring cash, then sit down to discuss the deal. When the time came to exchange gold for money at a set location, they'd carry out a planned robbery instead."
Police plan to question the arrested men on remand to gather information about other gang members still at large, he added.
