A crude bomb has exploded outside the Supreme Court in Dhaka shortly after the International Crimes Tribunal sentenced seven Awami League leaders, including party General Secretary Obaidul Quader, to death over crimes against humanity during the July Uprising.
The explosion took place around 1:15pm on Tuesday near the entrance used by the chief justice and other judges, Shahbagh Police chief Md Moniruzzaman said.
He said someone threw the crude bomb, which then exploded, and police were working to identify those involved.
No casualties have been reported.
The tribunal sentenced the seven to death over crimes against humanity committed during the July Uprising in 2024.
Besides Quader, the other convicts are Awami League Joint General Secretary AFM Bahauddin Nasim, former state minister for information and broadcasting Mohammad Ali Arafat, Jubo League President Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash and General Secretary Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, and Chhatra League president Saddam Hossain and general secretary Sheikh Wali Asif Enan.
All seven are absconding.
The tribunal also ordered the seizure of half the assets of all the convicts except Saddam and Enan, with the proceeds to be given to families of those killed or injured during the Uprising.
