Bangabhaban staff Sarowar Alam remains in custody nearly 18 hours after his detention over the alleged hacking of the Jamaat-e-Islami chief’s X account, police have said.

Speaking to bdnews24.com on Wednesday evening, Shafiqul Islam, additional commissioner of the Detective Branch (DB) of Dhaka Metropolitan Police, said: “We are talking to him. No case has been filed yet. He will be produced in court once a case is lodged.”

DB officers detained Sarowar, an assistant programmer at Bangabhaban, on Tuesday night.

Earlier, Shafiqul told bdnews24.com: “We have brought Sarowar Alam in. His mobile phone and laptop have been seized and are being examined.”

About 18 hours later, police are yet to disclose any decision, divulging only that Sarowar is being questioned.

Political tensions escalated after a “misogynistic” post appeared on the Jamaat chief’s X handle.

The post, first circulated on Saturday, criticised women’s leadership and professional participation, stating: “On the question of women, Jamaat’s position is neither confused nor apologetic—it is principled. We do not think, women should come in the leadership. In Jamaat, it is impossible. Allah did not permit this.”

Jamaat claimed party chief’s account was hacked.

On Tuesday afternoon, a Jamaat delegation visited Bangabhaban to lodge a formal complaint over the alleged breach.

A general diary (GD) was filed with Hatirjheel Police over the allegation that the account was hacked. However, no case has been filed in the matter as of Wednesday evening, even after Sarowar’s detention.
