Bangladesh has sent a fresh request to India seeking the extradition of former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.
He was sentenced to death by the International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) for crimes against humanity linked to the July uprising.
State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam said on Monday the ministry had sent a letter to the Indian government requesting Asaduzzaman’s return, along with a copy of the ICT verdict sentencing him to death.
The interim administration led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus had earlier written to India in November 2025 seeking the extradition of both former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and Asaduzzaman.
Asked whether this was a second request for Asaduzzaman, Shama said he remained a fugitive and the government had sent the letter required under legal procedures.
"We have repeatedly said that, under diplomatic norms, protocols and the extradition treaty, [Asaduzzaman] will be brought back to face justice, just as proceedings will continue against [Hasina] and the other suspects," she said.
She added that the latest letter specifically concerned Asaduzzaman and that the foreign ministry would continue taking diplomatic steps in coordination with the law ministry whenever necessary.
On Nov 17 last year, the ICT sentenced Hasina and Asaduzzaman to death and ordered the confiscation of their assets.
Asaduzzaman was convicted over the killings of six people at Chankharpul and six others in Ashulia, where bodies were also burned.
Former inspector general of police Abdullah Al-Mamun received a reduced five-year sentence after turning state witness.
Shama said Bangladesh now awaited India's response and hoped it would honour its bilateral obligations.
