Food stocks sufficient to keep Ramadan market stable, says commerce minister

Ensuring price stability is one of the government's key priorities, he says

Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir has said the government has sufficient food stocks to keep prices of essential commodities stable during Ramadan.

Speaking to reporters at Sylhet Osmani International Airport on Friday, he said ensuring price stability was one of the key responsibilities of the Commerce Ministry, particularly during the holy month.

“One of the primary duties of the Commerce Ministry is to keep the prices of essential food items stable. This responsibility becomes even more important during Ramadan,” he said.

“When we assumed office, there was little time to take special measures ahead of Ramadan. However, the positive aspect is that we have adequate food stocks to maintain price stability in the market.”

After exchanging greetings with officials and party leaders, the minister outlined development priorities for Sylhet, including job creation, expansion of IT-related employment and plans to establish an AI centre.

“To generate employment, investment is necessary. To attract investment, we must improve connectivity, reduce bureaucratic red tape and ensure political stability,” he said.

He added that special policy support would be needed to encourage both expatriate and domestic investors in the region.

“We are working on these issues, and progress will be visible soon,” he said.

Highlighting global competition, Muktadir said neighbouring countries had adopted major digital initiatives, including AI training for public officials.

“If we lag behind, we will fall short in global competition. We must build our capacity accordingly,” he said.

He added that the government would work over the next five years to strengthen Bangladesh’s global standing.

Local lawmakers, senior civil and police officials, and BNP leaders were present during the visit.
